Maryland homeschool testing requirements

Testing rules vary dramatically by state. This page gives parents the current Maryland testing/evaluation summary, frequency, and practical next steps without burying the answer in legal language.

Plain-English note: this is a parent guide, not legal advice. Use the official source links at the bottom of the page before a deadline or filing decision.

Is testing required?

No statewide standardized testing requirement applies just for homeschooling, but the portfolio option includes regular portfolio reviews and umbrella programs may have their own oversight rules.

How often?

No statewide homeschool testing schedule. Under the portfolio option, portfolio reviews are generally held at least three times each year.

Recordkeeping connection

For the portfolio option, keep a portfolio showing instructional materials, reading materials, and examples of the student’s work. The portfolio must be available for review at the times required by the supervising authority.

Notification connection

Yes. Most homeschool families submit a Notice of Consent form, though umbrella-style options may route oversight differently. Deadline: Generally at least 15 days before starting a home instruction program, again each year, and within 15 days after moving into a new county.

Practical testing file

  1. 1Name of test, evaluator, or portfolio reviewer if used.
  2. 2Date completed and school year covered.
  3. 3Score report, evaluator letter, portfolio receipt, or parent summary.
  4. 4Copy of anything submitted to a district, umbrella school, or state office.
